Gregory Nava, Filmmaker of El Norte, is Honored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of El Norte’s release, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute honored filmmaker Gregory Nava and the making of the epic film El Norte at several of its National Public Policy Conference events from Sept. 14-16, 2009.

El Norte is a realistic film about the Guatemalan government’s oppression of the Mayan Indians and the hard life of illegal immigrants in the United States. It is the first American independent film to be nominated for an Oscar Award, and in 1995 the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry, one of only 500 films to be so honored.

On Sept. 15 at the National Press Club, CHCI and MAYA hosted a filmmaker’s discussion about El Norte. Mr. Nava discussed the making of his film, powerful scenes from the movie and its continued success, followed by a question and answer period.
